Invoicing From Scratch

A from-scratch Invoice starts empty and is tied only to a Client. Use it for deposits, one-off fees, product sales, or anything you didn’t track in a Project. You can still pull in tracked work later.

  1. Go to Invoices and click Create Invoice.
  2. Choose From Scratch.
  3. Under Client, select the Client.
  4. Click Start Blank Invoice.

The Invoice opens with one empty line item. The Client’s name, your default payment deadline and the Client’s default tax rates are already filled in.

Fill in each line item:

  • Description: what you’re billing for.
  • Quantity and Unit Price. hrglass works out the total.
  • Item type: Service or Product.
  • Project (optional): link the line to one of the Client’s Projects, or leave it on No project.

Click Add Manual Item for another line. Drag lines to reorder them.

Click Add from Tasks to pull in uninvoiced Tasks and expenses from any of the Client’s Projects. Tick what you want and click Continue with N items. Those Tasks are marked as invoiced when you save.

Click Create Invoice. You need a Client and at least one line item.

The rest works like any other Invoice. See Creating an Invoice for the Invoice details and taxes, and Sending an Invoice to send it.

A line item can have a negative amount, for example to refund a deposit or give a discount. If the total drops below zero, hrglass warns you so you can double-check.
